Just when the days of colic and ceaseless crying seem to be behind you; when your baby is maybe, just maybe, sleeping through the night; when she is starting to settle into a regular routine…here comes the tooth fairy to throw you both for a loop!

Somewhere between three and twelve months, your baby’s teeth will make their grand, grumpy entrance. Surprisingly though, teething symptoms can appear as much as two to three months before that first tiny tooth does. Symptoms and severity vary greatly from one baby to the next. Here’s how to read the signs of teething, and ease your baby’s discomfort.

  • Drooling. Teething babies are drooly babies. Add to that, baby chewing on her fingers/fist, and that drool is all of a sudden all over her face. Wet baby + cool temps in winter = chapped skin. Chapped skin is more exposed to the elements which can leave baby’s face open to fungal or bacterial infections (like ringworm or impetigo). There’s also what’s called “drool stool” in which the excess drool softens baby’s stool. More wetness down there can create a rash around baby’s bum.

Mother Nature - Natural Barrier BalmIn the Tool Kit:
We have added Mother Nature’s all-purpose barrier balm for nurturing and renewing those sensitive, dry and chapped areas and protecting baby’s skin against dryness. Intensively soothing for diaper rash and promoting speedy healing, this rich ointment is free of artificial preservatives, fragrances and colours, perfect for your little one’s teething einas!

  • Gnawing. She’s not trying to be naughty. Little nips at your fingers, breast (ouch!), or her spoon help relieve the pressure she feels from under her gums.

In the Tool Kit:
Most mums feel that they can’t wear jewellery during times of teething when baby wants to grab and chew on just about anything and everything. That’s why no Teething Tool Kit would be complete without a stunning Teething Bling Pendant, beautiful for mum and safe for baby! Made from the same material as most teething toys, these pendants look great on the adult wearer but are safe for curious babies to handle and chew. Non-toxic, phthalate, BPA, PVC, latex and lead free, all pendants come with a breakaway clasp as an added safety measure.

  • Crying and Fasting. Some babies breeze through teething with nary a whimper, while others suffer from a good deal of pain — which they feel compelled to share with you in the form of whining or crying. Since sucking movements can worsen teething pressure or pain, your baby may refuse to nurse or eat, or may nurse briefly and then turn away.

In the Tool Kit:
Traditional beaded amber necklaces are an non-intrusive remedy for the pain and side effects of teething, such as a lack of appetite, upset tummies, ear ache, fevers and colds. A natural analgesic, amber will help calm a baby without resorting to drugs. Our Teething Tool Kit includes a genuine Baltic Amber teething necklace that your baby can start wearing at 8 weeks, and keep to boost her immune system, reduce inflammation, and accelerate the healing of wounds for the rest of her life!

  • Gum swelling and sensitivity: The soreness and swelling of the gums before a tooth comes through is the cause for the pain and fussiness a baby experiences during this change. These symptoms usually begin about three to five days before the tooth shows and they disappear as soon as the tooth breaks the skin.

In the Tool Kit:
We have included our bestselling Natursutten Teething Toy in our kit to aid your baby during this period of development. Sucking and chewing on a semi-soft object helps your baby’s teeth to break through, and repeated chewing motions will allow the teeth to emerge with minimal trauma. The malleable rubber of the teething toy encourages baby’s natural gnawing action and the gently textured surface helps to sooth and massage irritated gums. Free from phthalates, colors, PVC, EVAtane, silicone, & BPA, the one-piece design of the Natursutten Teething Toy prevents bacteria accumulating in cracks and joints – a vital feature during this sensitive time.

Regardless of the symptoms your baby exhibits, you’ll be desperate to give her some teething relief. The one thing experts agree on is that you should call your child’s doctor if your baby has symptoms that worry you. Even if you think you can chalk up these conditions to an about-to-arrive tooth, mention them to your doctor, he can help determine whether your baby is showing signs of a problem that needs medical attention, like an ear infection.
