Unless you are using pocket cloth nappies, or all-in-one cloth nappies, your nappy will require the use of a cloth nappy cover. Nappy covers are economical as they can be used several times before needing to be washed, unless they smell or are soiled. Simply hang them to air dry between uses and by the next change they should be good to go again.
Bamboo fabric is one of the most popular materials used in modern cloth nappies. It is softer than cotton with a texture similar to silk. It is a super absorbent, naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic product, grown without the use of chemicals or pesticides. It is also quick to absorb moisture, keeping baby dry and odor free. Pure bamboo can dry twice as fast as cotton. Bamboo fabric is wonderfully cool in summer and snug and warm in winter.
Known as the “work-horse” nappy, Prefolds are a rectangular piece of fabric made up of several layers of 100% cotton, sewn into three panels. The middle panel typically has more layers, and is therefore more absorbent, than the outside two panels. A high-quality Prefold will state how many layers of fabric used, such as 4x8x4. This is known as the “ply” of the nappy and means that the two outside panels have 4 layers of fabric, and the middle panel has 8 layers.
